My good friend Dylan and I were on the home stretch of our 3 week cycling/backpacking trip to the tip of Vancouver Island (Cape Scott), when we got the news about the escalating situation in Tibet (March, 2008). It was essential for Dylan, being heavily involved with the UBC branch of Students for Free Tibet, to be at the protest march the following morning. Unfortunately, it was 10pm and we were more than 90km from the closest ferry to Vancouver. Immediately, our eyes lit up and our bodies ached at the prospect of an all night bike ride with 650km already behind us. Nonetheless, we scarffed down some food from the fish market, re-packed our bikes, and started cycling. We finally rolled into Nanaimo at 5:30am, all reserves drained, only to continue cycling through Vancouver in time to make it for the protest.
